In a significant step toward sustainable public transportation, BasiGo Rwanda has officially launched the country’s first-ever 100% electric intercity coaches. The launch event took place on July 31, 2025, in Rubavu District.
The landmark rollout took place at Rubavu Taxi Park, setting the stage for a cleaner, more efficient, and inclusive future of mobility in Rwanda. People from Rubavu who attended the event expressed great joy in welcoming buses that contribute to environmental protection.
The newly introduced electric coaches come in 35-seater and 42-seater variants and boast an impressive range of 350 kilometers on a single charge. This makes them capable of handling round trips between Kigali and major towns such as Rubavu, Huye, Nyagatare, Rusumo, and Karongi without the need to recharge — a major leap in transport convenience and sustainability.
Designed with both comfort and innovation in mind, the coaches are equipped with reclining seats, air suspension systems, overhead luggage racks, and spacious undercarriage cargo compartments. Safety and technology features include individual seatbelts, onboard CCTV surveillance, and fire-suppression-enabled battery systems.
Passenger experience is further enhanced through air conditioning, digital monitoring, and inclusive features such as wheelchair ramps, ensuring accessibility for all users. For fleet operators, BasiGo offers its innovative Pay-As-You-Drive (PAYD) lease model. This flexible system eliminates upfront capital requirements and provides benefits such as free charging, proactive maintenance, and real-time vehicle tracking.
In his address, Rubavu District Mayor Mr. Mulindwa Prosper highlighted the importance of the electric coaches in protecting the environment and praised BasiGo for launching a project that will greatly benefit the residents of the district.
As operating costs for diesel vehicles continue to rise, the introduction of electric fleets presents a financially viable and environmentally responsible alternative for transport companies. BasiGo’s entry into Rwanda marks not just a technological advancement but a transformational moment in East Africa’s journey toward sustainable development. With the support of both government and private stakeholders, Rwanda’s intercity transport landscape is poised for a green revolution — one electric coach at a time.
